How does travel insurance work in the context of international adoption?
We are often asked how travel insurance works for people traveling abroad to adopt a child.
There are unique needs for those traveling abroad for adoption. Will travel insurance cover costs related to a change in court date? Will it cover costs related to extended stays related to visa problems for your new child?
Through discussions with multiple travel insurance companies, we’ve learned that coverage for visa issues and court dates is not available.
Travel Insurance Options and Consideration for International Adoption
While there is presently no ideal travel insurance solution for international adoption, you should still purchase coverage to protect your family from unexpected medical needs, evacuation needs, and trip interruption and delays.
There are 3 different plans that are worth considering:
1. Trip cancellation plans with “Cancel for Any Reason” riders. If you’re concerned that your trip could be completely canceled and rescheduled, this plan will help you recover the cost of the trip.
Court dates and visa problems are not going to fall under the covered causes for standard trip cancellation plans. So you’ll need to add the “cancel for any reason” option, which is only available on the RoundTrip Elite plan. (Note: You have to buy this plan within 21 days of your initial trip deposit). The downside to this option is price. This plan is far more expensive than the next two.
2. Multi-trip insurance plans. If your adoption process will result in you taking multiple trips abroad over the course of a year, you can purchase one plan that will cover you for all those trips. A multi-trip plan will obviously give you a good amount of flexibility should your plans change.
3. Traditional individual travel insurance plans. A good, standard travel insurance plan will provide you with important protection. The prices are so low that, honestly, it’s just unwise to travel without one.
We primarily utilize the HCC Atlas plan for individuals and families traveling abroad.
